Props are a key piece of our yoga practice because none of us is practicing yoga in the same body from day to day, month to month, or year to year. We are always changing, so it makes sense that learning how to be adaptive in our asana practice in different seasons of life, fluctuating energy levels, and evolving body shapes and sizes is vital to a lifelong study of yoga. Props train us in discernment and can help us claim creative agency in the shapes we make in our bodies…imagine the implications of using these skills in our living yoga practice off of our mats!
Blocks, blankets, chairs, straps, walls, bolsters–you name it–can all be used for the purposes of:
-Accessibility: making a posture or action available (and enjoyable!) for your body
-Growth: learning new muscular and energetic actions
-Support: offering restorative adaptations that create more freedom
Nerd out with me (hi, it’s Laura!) in this weekend immersion for students and teachers of yoga where we’ll use ALL THE PROPS to explore these ideas. My hope is that we start to bridge the gap between prescribed shapes and what we as individuals find useful, interesting, and supportive of a life-long, life-giving yoga practice.
Logistics:
This weekend immersion is held in-person at Laura’s home studio in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Yoga Landing. If you’re interested in taking this training virtually, or have questions about accommodations in Chattanooga, email Laura directly.
